president Nathan to step down after 12 years in office






      Two days beforehis 87th birthday , president S R nathan finnaly madde the announcement many had expected for weeks : that he would step down when his second term runs out on Augh 31.
      “At this stage of my life, i do not believe that I can undertake indenfinitely the heavy responsibilities and physical demands of the position of head of state,”  he said yesterday.
     His 12 yers in office make him the longest –serving  president in Singapore’s  history.
     They cap a 55 –year career inpublic service, which saw him take on roles such as ambassador to the united states and permanent secretary of  the froigen affairs ministry . he also served as director if singapore’s external inteiligence ar, the security and  intelligencedivision of the defence  ministry.
      In a frank  two-page statment released to the media yesterday, the president acknowledged both  the singaporeans who had cristicised him andthose who had sownhim “affection and kindness”.
      During his years in office, he had given his best in the perfomance of all his duties , whether constituotinal, ceremonial or community-related , he said.
     “ If have falen short, iwould like the poeple of singapore to know that this has not been for Lack of effort or comitment . I have tried to do my best,” he said.
