 MUSIC STYLE LINKIN PARK

Both Hybrid Theory and Meteora combine the alternative metal,[7] nu metal,[17][86][87][88][89]rap rock[89][90] sound with influences and elements from hip-hop, alternative rock,[91] and electronica, utilizing programming and synthesizers. William Ruhlmann from Allmusic regarded it as "a Johnny-come-lately to an already overdone musical style,"[92] whereas Rolling StoneBreaking the Habit" as "risky, beautiful art".[93] and described their song "
In Minutes to Midnight the band experimented with their established sound and drew influences from a wider and more varied range of genres and styles, a process Los Angeles TimesU2's work.[94] In it, only two of the songs feature rapping, and the majority of the album can be considered alternative rock.[95][96] NME magazine's Dan Silver criticized the band's approach, calling it the "sound of a band trying and failing to forge a new identity", and referring to the song "Hands Held High", a song about terrorist attacks and war, as "far and away the funniest thing you will hear all year".[97] compares to a stage in
The vocal interplay between Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda plays as a major part within Linkin Park's music, with Bennington being the lead vocalist and Shinoda as the rapping vocalist. On Linkin Park's third album, Minutes to Midnight, Shinoda sings lead vocals on "In Between", "Hands Held High", and on the B-side "No Roads Left". On numerous songs from band's fourth album, A Thousand Suns, such as the album's four singles, both Shinoda and Bennington sing. On most of the record's tracks, the band notably used electronic drumbeats along with outro drumbeats. The album has been regarded as a turning point in the band's musical career by notable critics. James Montgomery, of MTV compared the record to Radiohead's Kid A,[98] while Jordy Kasko of Review, Rinse, Repeat likened the album to both Kid A and Pink Floyd's landmark album The Dark Side of the Moon.[99] Shinoda stated that he and the other band members were deeply influenced by Chuck D and Public Enemy. He elaborated: "Public Enemy were very three-dimensional with their records because although they seemed political, there was a whole lot of other stuff going on in there too. It made me think how three-dimensional I wanted our record to be without imitating them of course, and show where we were at creatively".[87] One of the record's political elements is its samples of notable speeches by American political figures.

GIC denied right to bid for bankrupt resort

NEW YORK: The Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) lost a bid to move forward with a US$1.5 billion (S$1.8 billion) offer for a group of resort that United States hedge fund Paulson & Cois seeking to restructure.
The sovereign wealth fund says the five resort are putting it and other creditors at risk by prolonging their bankcruptcy case and should instead be put for sale.
US bankcruptcy judge Sean Lane in New York rejected that argument on Wednesday , giving the  resort more time to control the bankcrupty  so they can pursue restructing objectives. GIC sought to end that control so it could push ahead with its offer."The debtors do get a chance to do what Chapter 11 contemplates," Judge  Lane said at a hearing , referring to a section in the bankruptcy code.

The authoritarian rule of Lee Kuan Yew
From 1966 the People's Action Party (PAP) government under Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew embarked on a policy of making Singapore a tightly disciplined ‘garrison state’ on the Israeli model. Lee established a national army (with compulsory male military service), and extended the police force, the paramilitary bodies, and PAP community organizations. He brought the trade unions under PAP control, and legislated against political opposition. He also embarked on a large-scale public housing programme and developed the country's infrastructure, providing the foundations for economic growth.
One justification for the policy of strict regimentation and militarization was that Singapore, as a wealthy, largely Chinese city-state surrounded by a hostile Malay population, needed to protect itself; another was the need to achieve the political stability necessary for foreign investment; a third was the rundown of the British military presence announced in the British government's 1967 White Paper on defence. The PAP gained a monopoly of all parliamentary seats in the elections between 1968 and 1980.
After 1966, with the reopening of Indonesia to foreign investment, Singapore's servicing role in regional development was greatly enhanced. Under Lee's stewardship, Singapore developed rapidly as a commercial and financial entrepôt and as a centre for new export industries. The country's standard of living increased rapidly.

President S R Nathan's statement

President S R Nathan's statement
In a few days I will be reaching the age of 87 years. At this stage of my life, I do not believe that I can undertake indefinitely the heavy responsibilities and physical demands of the position of head of state.
I have therefore decided not to seek a third term in office and will step down as president of Singapore. Over the past 12 years, I have tried to do my best as head of state in all my duties, whether it be constitutional, ceremonial or community-related.
I have gained new insights into the lives of our people in all walks of life the dispossessed, disabled and impoverished as well as those able to enjoy the fruits of our economic progress. I have sought public support for various social causes, benefiting the less fortunate.
If I have fallen short, I would like the people of Singapore to know that this has not been for lack of effort or commitment. I have tried to do my best.
No doubt I have earned my fair share of criticsm. Anyone who takes on public responbilities has to expect that.
I have taken such comments whether made directly or via social media as made in good conscience, and well antended.
At the same time, I have been privileged, from the day I came into office, to receive the goodwill and affection of countless Singaporeans, shown in many ways, both public and private.
I will always cherish the memory of my interactions with these Singaporeans. I find difficulty in finding words to describe their affection and kindess.
Whatever the Constitution says about the powers of the elected president, and however varied people's perceptions of the office may be, ultimately the welfare of our country and people depends upon the way Singapore is governed and administered.
That depends in turn upon the qualities of the men and women elected by the people to Parliament, and on those who take up office in government.
I believe that if those who serve in the Government or any other area of public administration meet the demands of their office to the best of their ability, and if they show widsom and integrity in looking after the interests of Singapore, we can ask no more.
We face a future in which the challenges to our leaders will be different from those in the past, but every bit as substantial. We must all be responsive to constructive criticism.
At the same time, whether in the office of president or in the executive arm of government, we will always need people of strong character and vision who resist populist pressures and the temptation to sacrifice the long-term interest of the nation in response to those who merely snipe without having to take responsbility.
To serve as president of Singapore has been an honour. To Singaporeans regadless of race, religion or social status, I owe an eternal debt for the opportunity to do so. I will cherish the memory of my association they showered on my wife and me.
