My Article from news paper

Australian Blossoms
Toowoomba is the second largest inland city after Canberra, which is the capital of Australia.
In early spring. To be more precise, in September when the famous Australian Carnival of flowers  is held. It is difficult to find accomodation during the carnival period, especially during weekends when various event are going on.
In Toowoomba, housing estates are very spread out and there are not high-rise buildings since land is not at a premium, unlike in Singapore.
What is one place you always take your friend to when they visit you? Picnic point, one of the most popular recreation sites in the city.

Japanese Food, Ramen

Ramen is a noodle soup that was originally imported to Japan from China in the Meiji Period. In more recent decades, it has become a very popular dish in Japan, adapted to the Japanese taste. Ramen restaurants (ramen ya) number in the thousands, and instant ramen (invented in 1958) is popular both in and outside of Japan.
Ramen noodles are about as thin as spaghetti and are served in a soup that varies based on region, city and even specific vendor. Ramen's popularity stems in part from the fact that it is so inexpensive and widely available, making it an ideal option for budget travelers. In addition to freshly prepared ramen at ramen ya, supermarkets and convenience stores offer a large selection of instant ramen bowls.
Though ramen can be considered a one dish meal, gyoza are a common side dish offered at ramen ya. These Chinese style, pan fried dumplings are eaten with a soya and vinegar sauce. Shichimi (red chili mix) is usually available on the table to be added according to taste.
Ramen can be classified according to its soup base. The most popular ones are:
  • Shoyu Ramen: Brown, transparent, soya sauce based soup
  • Miso Ramen: Brown, non-transparent, miso based soup.
  • Shio Ramen: Transparent, salt based soup.
  • Tonkotsu Ramen: White, milky, pork based soup.

Ramen can also be named according to its ingredients. For example, chashumen is a ramen dish that features barbecued pork as toppings

Pets Corner

Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are classified as crustaceans, but are not considered “ true crabs “, which belong to a different subgroup. Some species of hermit crabs live partly on land with their natural habitats on shorelines and beaches. Some are more aquatic.
The more terrestrial species have been kept as pets for several decades, as people find it amusing that they live in the empty shells of other animals which have discarded those shells, or which have died. They need to live in the borrowed shells because they have very soft bodies, with vulnerable abdomens. They change from shell to shell as they grow bigger and become too large for their current shells.
However, they relative popularity as pets does not necessarily mean that it is advisable to keep them. For one thing, many pet owners and even pet shops do not know how to properly care for hermit crabs. A good number of these creatures therefore die whit in a few weeks or months in captivity. Secondly some businesses may have purchased hermit crabs from sources which removed them from the wild instead of breeding them from captive populations. Supporting the removal of wildlife from natural areas could harm ecosystem.
If you do have hermit crabs pets, however, or intend to keep some which you can get from a reputable and responsible source, there are things you should know about caring for them so as to keep them healty, contented and safe. We will look at some of these pointers in the following weeks.

Blue skies for China orphans

Singaporean Tania Hoahing-Goh, 40, was living in Beijing when she spotted a need for a foster home there that could take in orphans with health problems.
Most people would have felt helpless or, at the most, asked the government authorities ti set up such a home.
         Not Mrs Hoahing-Goh.
She simply decided to start one.
Her basic philosophy was: Care for the children first, worry about the details later.
Blue Sky Healing Home was started in 2004 and takes in orphans with complex medical conditions on a short-term basis, cares for them and then sends them back to their original orphanages when they are better.
Mrs Hoahing-Goh's then-husband - they have since divorced - was working in China, which gave her the oppurtunity to volunteer in the orphanages there.
Over the past seven years, the home she founded, which can accommodate 20 at a time, has helped moe than 120 childern, many with life-threatening medical conditions that required major surgery, such as cranial reconstruction so allow for brain growth.
Recently, three children were flown to Singapore for surgery before heading back to Beijing.
Mrs Hoahing-Goh work with docktor and hospitals in Singapore and Beijing to seek the best care for the orphans.
The procedures they undergo here are sponsored by private donors and hospitals.
On the home's beginnings, she recalls that she first rented  a house for $700 a mounth and paid staff of six about $100 to $500 each a mounth.
It has now expanded to three houses with a staff of about 14.
She used her own money to start up but says that onve she took the plunge, funds came in from the expatriate community in Beijing.
Before starting her own home, she had been volunteering in Beijing orphanages, shuttling children around and accompanying them to their doctor's appointments.
She says: "If we had spent a lot of time weighting the ricks and dangers of operating a foster home as foreigners, we probably would have ended our efforts at the first discovery of red tape and other bureaucratic difficulties.
Mrs Hoahing-Goh's advice to those hoping to start an overseas NGO would be to "work with and hire local people who share the same passion and who are ideally not working just for the salary".
"Put your heart and soul into cause," she says.

Let's help each other fellow human beings, willing to help and steadfast.

My son keeps waking up at night

My son keeps waking up at night

Although we perceive sleep as a continuous process, it is technically not corret. Sleep is broadly divided inti two main periods: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) slepp, which is also called active sleep, and non-REM sleep, also called quiet sleep.
REM sleep is characterised  by rapid eye movement, motor movement, vocalisation, dreaming and easy awakening. This is the most common cause of perceived awakening, altough most children are actually not awake and to back to sleep on their own. It is a problem only if the child cries or is unble to get back to sleep without his parents’ help.
The other common couse of night-time awakenings is stress of moving into a new accommodation, loss of a loved one or separation from the caragiver.
Occasionally, nightmares and night terrors also cause awakening. A child who suffers from night terror is extremely frightened and agitated and although he appears awake, he is actually in deep sleep.
Most of the cause cited above do not require any apecific treatment. In fact, paernts should remain calm if the child goes back to sleep on his own. Once the caregiver starts helping the child to go back to sleep, a cycle will be set up and the child will then refuse to sleep on his own.
